In the Loop

Upload yourself to fame

Upload Yourself to Fame.

Blogs, standup comedy, films, music videos and dancing hamsters are all part of the fun at MySpace and YouTube.

Both sites offer a community of social interaction unlike anything seen before on the web. It's a new phenomenon and it's growing fast. MySpace alone has more than 50 million members worldwide, each with their own personal profile. It offers members a social arena where they can make friends all over the world.

It's home to comedians, fi lmmakers and musicians - each of whom has set up their own personal profiles and uploaded songs, music videos or fi lms for others to download.

Sites like MySpace and YouTube are also quickly becoming the new place where celebrities are discovered then propelled to stardom. Take British band the Arctic Monkeys. After posting their music for free on the site they quickly established a fan base on MySpace and in chatrooms across the world. Domino records saw the hype and signed the band immediately.

On YouTube, unlikely celebrities are fi nding fame, too, such as videoblogger Nornna. Nornna has achieved minor stardom by being the most sought-after blogger on YouTube. She's just a regular woman with a strange sense of humour who fi lms herself partaking in the most commonplace activities, but her fans find her immensely appealing.

YouTube came on the scene in early 2005 and has become one of the web's fastest growing sites. Like MySpace, it allows users to upload and view video clips for free. Its slogan, 'Broadcast Yourself', tells you its main objective: to provide a variety of clips from music videos, movies and TV snippets to amateur videoblogs for anyone to see.

Just recently, YouTube stepped up a notch and used celebrity socialite Paris Hilton to promote its site.

Her new video was posted on the main page, which was watched 900,000 times in just four days. Hilton is also now the star of YouTube's fi rst brand channel, which can be accessed by all YouTube users who upload videos onto the site.

YouTube and MySpace are providing a whole other world of information and entertainment as well as a place for you to get your name out there. And they're helping quirky, talented individuals rise to fame.

Having your own profi le on either of these sites enables you to post a blog, tell the world your interests, download new music, view funny clips and mingle with celebrities. And come on, who is not tempted by that?
